What is an e-OCI card?

The Electronic Overseas Citizen of India Card or e-OCI Card is the digital version of the OCI Card issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India. It contains the verified particulars of the OCI cardholder as available in the official OCI records. The e-OCI Card can be downloaded from the Government of India OCI portal and stored electronically upon generation. The OCI scheme was first introduced in 2005.

The e-OCI Card is expected to provide easier and more convenient digital access to OCI documentation to the OCI Cardholders. For new OCI applicants the OCI Card will be issued electronically after processing and approval of the application. Basic eligibility and application process are still governed by existing OCI requirements. Please note that your Current physical OCI booklets remain valid, the existing OCI cardholders need not surrender or replace their physical OCI booklet with the introduction of e-OCI facility. A valid physical OCI booklet will continue to be accepted for immigration clearance and other permissible OCI services.

The e-OCI Card shall not replace the foreign passport of the cardholder. At iVacs we always advise applicants that they should carry current valid passports linked with OCI record while travelling. In case of change in passport particulars, OCI record may need to be updated first through OCI Miscellaneous Services.
